Winner of three prizes at this year’s Venice Film Festival; including Best Actor for Michael Fassbender and the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Film (which is voted for by international film critics). Steve McQueen’s second film, after the powerful Hunger, continues his collaboration with Michael Fassbender (Jane Eyre, and David Cronenberg’s upcoming A Dangerous Method) who is fast becoming one of the finest, and most versatile actors of recent years.
Fassbender plays Brandon, a 30-something man living in New York who is completely unable to manage his sex life. When his younger sister Sissy (played by Carey Mulligan) comes to stay uninvited, her presence heightens Brandon’s frustration and he goes on a hedonistic search of ever-greater sexual pleasures on the city streets.
Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.
