The subject of IFF 2011’s retrospective, Terence Davies is back with his first feature film since 2000’s The House of Mirth. The Deep Blue Sea is an adaptation of a play by Terence Rattigan, who was nominated for two Oscars in the 1950’s. This year sees the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Rachel Weisz plays Hester, the bored wife of a judge (played by Simon Russell Beale, the multi award winning stage actor) who embarks on a passionate affair with a dashing young RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Tom Hiddlestone, who is soon to be seen in two very different films Steven Speilberg’s War Horse and the Marvel superhero film The Avengers).
